What do you do at Rocket Lawyer & what’s your favorite part of your job?
I work alongside Monique in the HR department. My favorite part of this job is actually pretty simple: the people. After getting my degree in Graphic Design (and a short stint as an active designer), I quickly realized that I missed working closely with people — You can smile at the computer all you want, it rarely smiles back.
My answer to this could change at the slightest breeze-shift, but: Magnolia; Zodiac; Come Back to the Five and Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean; Rabbit Hole; Weekend; Shame; Short Term 12; Goodfellas; Pleasantville; Jackie Brown; Postcards from the Edge… my full list could really fill 5 pages, but I’ll spare you my endless comma-ing.
If you could have dinner and pick the brain of any famous person (celebrity, politician, musician, etc.), who would it be and why?
I’d have to say Marsha P. Johnson, a black transgender woman — largely thought to be one of the key inciters of the Stonewall riots.
The Stonewall riots were a series of spontaneous, violent demonstrations by members of the LGBT community against a police raid that took place in June of 1969, at the Stonewall Inn (A bar in NYC.) The riots are widely considered to constitute the single most important event leading to the gay liberation movement and the modern fight for LGBT rights in the United States.
Because of these brave steps, I’m able to stand here today and proudly talk openly about the topic and my own identity. I would just have so many questions…
Quote to live by/best advice you’ve ever received:
A lovely message from my mother after I went through an unexpected and tough breakup. (It doesn’t have universal application, but in this context it somehow gave me almost immediate peace):
“… Sometimes the beauty of things is in their Brevity.”
