Inside Rocket Lawyer: Ignite 2014 Kickoff Day

We are now faced with the fact that tomorrow is today. We are confronted with the fierce urgency of now. In this unfolding conundrum of life and history, there is such a thing as being too late. Procrastination is still the thief of time. Life often leaves us standing bare, naked, and dejected with a lost opportunity. The tide in the affairs of men does not remain at flood — it ebbs. We may cry out desperately for time to pause in her passage, but time is adamant to every plea and rushes on. Over the bleached bones and jumbled residues of numerous civilizations are written the pathetic words, “Too late.” — Martin Luther King, Jr.

Exactly one year later after he delivered this famous speech, to the day, Dr. King was gone. He was 39 years old. His entire civil rights career lasted from the Montgomery Bus Boycott in 1955 until the Memphis sanitation workers’ strike in 1968. Only 13 years.

Today, Rocket Lawyer is at Year Six — can you believe it? We hardly can. Our company has been built the right way by good people, and our moment is now. To pay homage to this fact, we all participated in our first Annual Ignite Kickoff Day on January 28th.

Our offices were transformed into colorful, inspiring spaces buzzing with energy and overflowing with snacks. (But seriously, there were so many snacks!) Everyone donned their IGNITE t-shirts, piled their plates high with either pastries or hummus depending on their degree of loyalty to lingering New Years resolutions, and gathered by the main stage around 11 AM to kick off the event.

The day started off strong with inspirational talks from our founder Charley Moore and CEO Dan Nye, who highlighted our accomplishments in 2013 and — more importantly — what we are shooting for in the future. While Dan reminded us about what defines our unique company culture and talent, Charley set our theme for 2014: the fierce urgency of now. A refreshed commitment to our critical mission of making the law simple and affordable for everyone unites us all as we move forward with our respective teams’ projects this year.

Fired up by our execs’ “go get ‘em” vibes, the rest of us split up into different breakout groups and nestled into various corners of the office to brainstorm team objectives strategies to make our products and services better than ever before. Tasked with presenting our results via a five-minute Ignite-style Prezi, we fought against the clock to put together thoroughly informative and entertaining presentations. Highlights included “Docs by Dre,” an incorporation fairytale about donuts, and an innovative take on the plot of Titanic.

Rocket Lawyer, personified.

Even all of this awesomeness, however, couldn’t prepare us for the day’s biggest surprise: guest speaker and NFL titan Ronnie Lott! Ronnie burst onto the scene like a fireball of enthusiasm and encouragement, and had all of us wrapped around his little finger as he regaled us with motivational stories of leadership and perseverance in the face of seemingly insurmountable adversity. By cold-calling various members of the audience and running some animated (and hilarious) defensive plays down the aisle, he got all of us thinking about how to apply his famous give-it-your-all mindset to the work we do each and every day here at Rocket Lawyer. Getting to try on his Super Bowl rings wasn’t too shabby either!

Incorporation Specialist Ashley Green was one of the lucky ones Ronnie Lott called upon in the audience and had an all-around fantastic day. “It was a great experience. I really enjoyed getting the opportunity to collaborate with co-workers from all different departments. And my God, the food!”

These sentiments were echoed wholeheartedly by analyst Case Van Arkel, whose Marketing team won the “Most Spirited” award. “I didn’t just have a good time at Ignite day 2014, I had an absolute blast. The festivities included an incredible smorgasbord of food, new ‘swag’ to replenish my endless appetite for free stuff, and a surprise appearance by the awesomely motivating Hall of Fame NFL running back, Ronnie Lott. The enthusiasm, creativity, and camaraderie displayed by my coworkers confirmed my belief that Rocket Lawyer is company made of wickedly smart, genuinely passionate, and tirelessly competitive people. I have no doubt that Ignite Day 2014 will fuel us over the coming year, and beyond.”

A very special thanks to our Ignite Planning Committee for putting together an incredible event!
