Last week we celebrated Thanksgiving in the U.S. Hopefully you’re feeling rejuvenated and recharged after a (hopefully) relaxing holiday weekend. But feeling good about work is often easy after a few days off. The trick is to find ways to stay upbeat and positive about your career when you haven’t just enjoyed a vacation. Here are a few tips that may help.
1) Stay Focused On The Present
It’s been my experience that a lot of stress comes from worrying about things that may never happen. In fact, I’ve found myself awake in bed at night worrying about things that never ended up happening. It’s OK to be aware of future probabilities and to plan for them, but don’t put undue stress into things that may never occur. This is especially true when you’re stressing about things that not only may never occur, but which are completely out of your control. After all, your mental energy can often be better spent addressing the present.
2) Positive Thinking
It’s amazing how often one negative thought will lead to another negative thought, thereby sending your mood and emotional state into a downward spiral. When negative thoughts (i.e. “I hate this client/job/place/etc.”) creep in, block them out and find something positive to focus on. It’s amazing how much your happiness levels can be adjusted just by refusing to dwell in the negative.
3) Take a Break
We’ve discussed this before, but it’s important to recognize when you need a break. Studies have demonstrated that without occasional breaks our bodies, minds, and emotional well being all suffer. When you start to sense a lack of concentration or a general sluggishness, step away from your desk for a minute. Take a short walk outside or grab a cup of coffee or a glass of water. Shutting off for as little as ten to fifteen minutes will increase your overall productivity, emotional health, and mental and physical wellbeing.
