Modern slavery statement checklist

Make it Legal™ Checklist

Here are a few important steps to take to finish your document

Read the Modern Slavery Statement (MSS) to make sure it meets your needs.

Remember that if you have any questions you can easily Ask a lawyer.

Before being signed, the MSS needs to be approved by the board of directors, if the business is a company, or the partnership members, if the business is an LLP or general partnership.

The MSS must then be signed by a director (for companies), a designated member (for LLPs), or a general partner (for general partnerships). For more information, read Modern slavery statements.

Signing online

  1. You can sign online using RocketSign.

  2. The party signing for the business will receive an email invite to sign online.

Signing in print

  1. Print a copy of the MSS for the signatory to sign.

  2. Date and sign the MSS.

If you have a website, publish a link to the Modern Slavery Statement on your homepage or in a drop-down menu. If you have more than one relevant website, you should link to or place a copy of the Statement on each website.

If you do not have a website, provide a copy of the Statement in writing to anyone who requests one within 30 days.

You should publish your Statement at the end of the business’ financial year and, in any event, within 6 months of the end of the financial year.

For more information, read Modern slavery statements.

In 2021, the Government launched the modern slavery statement registry

While it is not currently mandatory for businesses to register their Modern Slavery Statements, they will need to do so in the future and are being encouraged to submit their most recently published MSS to demonstrate the steps they have taken to prevent modern slavery. This can be done online.

For more information, read Modern slavery statements.

The business should keep the original signed MSS. It is good practice to keep previous Modern Slavery Statements on your website so that your progress can be monitored.

A copy of the Modern Slavery Statement will also be stored automatically in your Rocket Lawyer account ‘Dashboard’.
