Employee handbook

Make it Legal™ Checklist

Here are a few important steps to take to finish your document

Read the Handbook carefully to make sure it meets your business needs. Remember that if you have any questions you can easily Ask a lawyer.

The Employee Handbook is not a contract and does not need to be signed or agreed to by your staff. You can ask staff members to sign an acknowledgement to show that they received it, but it’s not legally required.

Environmental policy

Note that, if included, the environmental policy must be signed by someone in senior management (eg a managing director, chairperson or chief executive). The person signing the policy is known as the ‘signatory’.

Signing online

  1. The signatory can sign online using RocketSign.

Signing in print

  1. Print a copy of the Handbook for the signatory.

  2. Sign and date the environmental policy contained in the Handbook.

Send a copy of your Employee Handbook to your staff to read and ensure they understand all aspects of the policies contained within it.

Make the Handbook available to staff by, for example:

  • including it in induction packs

  • providing it in hard copy

  • sending it out by email

  • putting it on notice boards, an intranet site or other easily accessible computer systems

A copy of your Handbook will be stored automatically in your Rocket Lawyer account ‘Dashboard’. You should also download and keep a copy of your Handbook for your records.

You should also keep records of any changes you make to the policies within your Handbook and when they were made.

Staff should also keep a copy of the Handbook or have easy access to it via a staff intranet.
