What Does an Alimony Attorney Do?

An alimony attorney (also called a spousal support attorney) can represent you when you're trying to negotiate your alimony amount or when you're trying to change a prearranged amount. Your lawyer can also take you through a lawsuit if your partner refuses to pay the negotiated amount.

How Do I Know If I Need an Alimony Attorney?

An alimony attorney may be necessary if you're going through a divorce and your divorce attorney doesn't specialize in spousal support cases. Divorce attorneys often do cover the entire divorce proceeding, including spousal support, but ask your lawyer ahead of time so that you know what services are covered and aren't covered.

How Much Does an Alimony Attorney cost?

Typically, alimony attorneys charge by the hour. Your fees will be much higher if you have to take your case to court, so it is easier in the long run to negotiate your alimony payments outside of court. To simply file paperwork, your lawyer may charge a flat rate. Rates will vary depending on where you live and whether you are going to court. Negotiate a rate up front so that you know how.

What Can I Expect from Working with an Alimony Attorney?

An alimony lawyer should be able to get you to an alimony settlement you're comfortable with, whether you're paying or receiving the payment. Your lawyer should know how to deal with a prenuptial agreement if you have one. Sometimes these support negotiations can get out of hand, but your attorney should be able to mediate the situation.
