A Green Card or Permanent Residence Card is evidence of a person’s lawful Permanent Resident status in the U.S.  If you have a Green Card, you have the right to live and work permanently in the United States. Permanent residency does not expire, but Green Cards issued since 1989 need to be renewed every 10 years.

There are several different ways to apply for a Green Card.  You can get a Green Card through a family member as well as through a job or the Green Card Lottery. If you qualify, you can also gain refugee or asylee status and then apply for a Green Card. Under certain circumstances, members of the armed forces and those who have assisted law enforcement may also qualify.
