Last month, we invited small business owners to show us their faces for a chance to win an iPad Mini and a Rocket Lawyer membership—tools to help get their businesses organized and on strong legal footing. We heard about cake makers, a sewing cafe for young girls, an art rental company, and a thrift store that helps low-income people find clothes for job interviews.
We’re now happy to announce the grand prize winner of our Faces of Small Business Facebook photo contest: Bebe Hirahara.
After working as a chef in other people’s kitchens most of her life, Bebe is about to launch BeBe-Que, a mobile barbecue truck based on her family favorites. It’s a multi-generational labor of love. Here’s what she has to say about it:
Q: Why did you decide to start your business?
A: Our family has a strong tradition of showing our love through making good food from scratch. We’re starting BeBe-Que because we want to share that love of good food. We’ve all worked hard in the restaurant industry over the last 40 years are and excited to start our own business. Our motivation is to create a product that will support and grow our family in a positive and delicious environment. We are solid people who want to work and play together. Basically, we love one another and want to share our barbeque with everyone who comes our way.
Q: Tell us more about the business.
A: BeBe-Que is currently preparing for its initial launch. We’re a mobile BBQ trailer which will be based in the greater San Luis Obispo area. We also have roots in the Central Valley so we’ll be visiting Fresno too. Our offerings include smoked tri-tip & ribs as well as homemade fixings that we think people are going to go crazy for. We recently held our first tasting in Fresno and received high praise from our Facebook fans that attended.
Q: Where do your recipes come from?
Our recipe inspiration comes from our family over the years. We all lived on the Hirahara Farm Vineyard and spent many lazy days barbecuing for family and friends. We used grape wood from the vines, fruit from our orchard and fresh veggies from the garden. As a farm family we used our harvest to create recipes we all loved. Today we’re translating that rich experience into BeBe-Que.
I am Bebe, a mom, grandmother and chef. My husband Steve is a dad, granddad and the pro behind the smoker. Our youngest daughter, Jackki, is the brains of the business. She keeps up our morale, manages our social media outreach and makes the best BeBe-Que sauce! Her husband Derek is the best prep chef a mother could ask for, and his root beer pulled pork will make you a fan. Jules, my granddaughter, is pitching in as our first employee helping us with this and that.
Congratulations, Bebe and Jackki!
