Naming a business is a crucial step. A well chosen brand name will help create a strong identity for your business. However, sometimes a name that looked great on paper just doesn’t resonate with customers. Or maybe you want to do business under a new name. Whatever your reasons, a good choice for renaming your business is to file a Doing Business As (DBA) application.

Filing Is Easy

Making a DBA filling is one of the easiest procedures in the United States. Typically, you will just have to verify that your desired name is available and that it doesn’t resemble a pre-existing business name (to prevent consumer confusion and trademark infringement), and then file an application with the county clerk. The form is usually called the Fictitious Business Name Statement, and the fees are usually in the $15 - $30 range. Once the name is registered, it will usually remain valid for five years. You can immediately conduct business under the new name.

Things to Watch Out For

Every state regulates the matter a little differently, so be sure to familiarize yourself with the local requirements for making a DBA filing. Some states may require you to publish a statement in a local newspaper, informing the public of your new business name. Others may require you to use your legal name alongside the DBA. The actual term of the DBA name may also vary from state to state. Always verify the requirements for properly filing a DBA name in your area. It’s even possible that the state you’re in doesn’t even require registering a DBA name. For example, Kansas has no such requirement.
