5 things you can do for your mental health

May is Mental Health Wellness Month. The goal of Mental Health Wellness Month is to increase mental health awareness and to highlight the importance of taking care of our mental health.

Here are a few things you can do to care for your own mental wellbeing:

    1. Focus on your strengths

Do not speak negatively about yourself even when no one is around. Work on turning your weaknesses into strengths. Work on it every day and seek out a mentor. Learn from your mistakes and take them as lessons.

    2. Maintain relationships

Having a support system is essential for everyone’s well being. As humans, we all need people to help cope with different situations and share stories. Be open and honest and motivate each other to be the best version of themselves. Everyone experiences challenges in their lives and it’s helpful to have someone you can lean on to get you through a rough patch.

    3. Take care of your body

Taking care of yourself physically can help with your mental health.

      • Eat nutritious meals
      • Avoid cigarettes
      • Avoid alcohol and drugs
      • Drink plenty of water
      • Exercise regularly
      • Get enough sleep.
    4. Seek help when needed

Getting help from a therapist or counseling is a sign of strength and should not be looked at as a weakness. It is important to remember that treatment can be effective.

    5. Get your legal documents in order

While most people don’t think about future mental health issues, a Mental Health Declaration and Power of Attorney can be a smart move for anyone.

Even if you take care of your health and follow a strict mental health regime, there may come a time when you need help. A Mental Health Declaration and Power of Attorney can help you ensure that the best mental healthcare choices are made for you should you become unable to make those choices for yourself. While no one wants this to happen and it may be uncomfortable to think about, it is better to think about it now than to have someone else make those choices for you without your input.

What is a Mental Health Declaration and Power of Attorney?

A Mental Health Declaration and Power of Attorney can help document your health care preferences and grant someone the authority to make mental health care decisions on your behalf if you become unable to make those choices for yourself.

    When do you need one?

It never hurts to have an updated Mental Health Declaration and Power of Attorney in place, especially if you have strong opinions about mental healthcare treatment.

A few things to consider are:

    • Do you have a preferred treatment center or hospital?
    • Would you consider volunteering as a medical subject or opt into an experimental treatment?
    • Would you like to appoint someone else to make decisions on your behalf?

Having everything documented can help ensure that your wishes are followed, but you should also inform your doctor(s) and attorney to make sure everyone is aware that your documents exist.

Who should you choose as your Healthcare Power of Attorney agent?

Someone you trust. Granting someone Power of Attorney can be an excellent way to supplement your health care declaration. After all, it’s impossible to account for every situation that may happen in a written document. Having someone able to make healthcare decisions on your behalf can help protect your interests if you’re met with circumstances that aren’t mentioned in your declaration. Sometimes the best person may not be your spouse or parent. It may be someone that you trust to make the decisions that YOU agree with rather than their own.

You’ll likely want to sit down with your agent, go through the contents of the document and spell out, verbally, what you’d like done in certain circumstances. This way, your agent will hear it directly from you and not be surprised when he or she is asked to make decisions on your behalf.

It’s often recommended that your estate plan be as comprehensive as possible, so it’s a good idea to consider creating a Living Will and a Power of Attorney. If you’d like more information, you can visit our estate planning page. If you still have questions you can ask a lawyer today.
