When is the tax extension deadline for businesses?

The deadline for S-Corporations and Partnerships to file tax returns or request extensions is generally March 15.

The due date for C-Corporations to file returns or request extensions is typically April 15.

Sole proprietors filing a Schedule C on their individual tax returns usually have until April 15 to file returns or request extensions.

When one of these due dates falls on a weekend or holiday, it is moved to the next business day. For businesses in and residents of states with local holidays on or around these dates, the deadline may also be different.

Remember that an extension of time to file your taxes does not give you an extension of time to pay what you owe. When requesting an extension, it’s important to estimate and pay as much as you can by the original due date to avoid interest and penalties.

What relief is available for businesses impacted by severe storms or disasters?

Businesses and individual tax filers impacted by severe storms or federally declared disasters may qualify for an extension to both file and pay their federal taxes. These extensions are automatically applied based on whether a taxpayer’s address is located within an official disaster area.

The IRS periodically announces extensions for certain states and counties affected by significant weather events or other emergencies. If severe weather or a disaster occurs in your area, check with the IRS on whether filing and payment deadlines have been extended in your region.

Extension dates can differ depending on how you file your taxes and the timing of the original deadlines.

Taking a proactive approach to your small business tax obligations can help you avoid tax penalties or interest payments.

If you need to file an extension or want guidance on your business tax responsibilities, you can review current requirements, forms, and instructions directly on IRS.gov or your state’s Department of Revenue website.
