Dear _________________:

Thank you so much for _________________ of a promotion to the position of _________________. I appreciate the confidence you have shown in my abilities.

As you know, I have wanted this position for some time, and I have been working toward this promotion. I suppose that it is one of life's many ironies that now when I have been offered the promotion I've been seeking, it seems that accepting it at this time would create overwhelming conflicts in other areas of my life. _________________.

_________________, obviously, the easiest thing for me to do would be to say yes to you, even knowing that the timing of the promotion is such that it would be nearly impossible for me to do the excellent job that you would expect from me and that I would expect from myself. However, I cannot accept a job unless I feel I could give it my best efforts. In _________________, the situations that currently preclude my accepting this job should be resolved. I realize that this particular position will have been filled by then, but I hope that when another opening comes up at that later time, you will keep me in mind.

Again, thank you for your offer. I wish that I could accept it. Please know that my ultimate goals here at _________________ are still the same. It is simply that the time-frame for implementation needs a brief extension.

Sincerely,
