Mitchell served on the staff of Governor Gerald L. Baliles and serves as a key political advisor to many Virginia elected officials. He has served as a director for numerous business and civic entities. Governor Mark Warner appointed him to the Virginia State Board for Community Colleges. He serves as President of both the Blacksburg Country Club and the Virginia Public Safety Foundation.
