Free FTC Identity Theft Complaint

The FTC may require that you include copies of any documentation proving the identity theft.

You should keep a copy of all written communications with the FTC and maintain a written summary of all oral communications.

The purpose of this letter is to file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) regarding identity theft. You may also call the FTC and make the complaint (1-877-ID THEFT).

If you choose to file your complaint online, then you should print a copy of the complaint before submitting it to the FTC. You may use this letter to follow up with the FTC regarding your complaint or you may choose to use this letter to make an initial complaint regarding your identity theft. While the FTC does not investigate individual occurrences of identity theft, it does act as a clearinghouse which investigates fraud and can lead to law enforcement action. For instance, if the rate at which identity theft is currently growing continues at such a high level, the government may begin to enact stronger policies against this crime.

1. This complaint letter should be signed, but it is not necessary that the signature be witnessed or notarized.

2. Be sure to attach any appropriate documentation.

3. Retain a copy of the letter for your records. Keep the original copies of any enclosures, unless you are required to send the originals. If you send an original, keep a copy.

4. Although not required, sending the letter in a manner that can be tracked (e.g., overnight courier or certified mail/return receipt requested) is highly advisable. It may assist you in the event you need evidence of receipt of the letter.

5. After a reasonable amount of time has passed, follow up to make sure that any requested action was actually taken.
