Frequently Asked Questions
What's the difference between separation and divorce?
A separation is like a divorce in that the Court makes a final determination on all aspects of a marriage, from the division of property, assets and debts, spousal support, child support, visitation and custody. However, the court's decision only dissolves the marriage in a divorce; in a separation, the couple is still legally married. Only in a divorce are spouses free to remarry.

Do I need a lawyer to get a divorce?
If you and your spouse are filing for a no fault divorce and it's uncontested, meaning you agree on all the terms of your divorce, you may not need a lawyer. You don't need a divorce lawyer in order to file divorce papers, such as a Divorce Settlement Agreement, but when it comes to complicated cases involving a lot of property and assets, or cases where the divorcing parties don't agree on terms, a good divorce lawyer can make the process much smoother and potentially less expensive in the long run.
