Your driver’s license is valid only for a certain length of time after it is issued. In order to ensure accurate DMV records, you are required to renew your driver’s license every several years. Sometimes you can renew online or by mail, but at certain intervals you must go to a DMV to renew in order to have your photo id updated. If you are not certain whether your license is valid, check your driving record online or at your local DMV office.
The following may be required for your driver's license renewal:
- Show proof of identity and citizenship
- Complete an application with up to date personal information like address and name changes
- Pay a small application fee
- Fill out a medical questionnaire and take an eye exam
- Take a new photo
Some states also require you to retake a written and/or driving test, so be sure to keep current on all driving safety rules. For more information on your state’s driver’s license renewal policies and procedures, follow the links below.
