Dear _________________:
Thank you for your phone call _________________, in which you informed me that you have not yet received the check that I promised to mail you. I know that it's an old joke to say that "the check is in the mail," but in my case it is actually true. Unfortunately, the Post Office made me into a liar by misplacing the envelope.
I have just gotten off the phone with a Postal Inspector in the _________________ office of the Post Office. The inspector's name is _________________. He has assured me that they have put a tracer on the envelope -- which had been sent via certified mail -- and that they should locate it shortly.
In the meantime, I know you still want to receive the money you are owed. What would you like me to do? I can wait for the Post Office to find and deliver the envelope I sent you last week, or put a stop payment on that check and send you a new one via a different carrier.
Please let me know your preference, and I will follow up. I'm very sorry for the delay and inconvenience, and I know the Post Office is, too.
Sincerely,
