What should my Homeowner's or Renter's policy cover?

Homeowner's insurance usually covers your house and its contents against loss from fire, storm, theft, and any other perils mentioned in the policy. Such insurance also includes liability protection, which means that you are covered if someone is injured on your property.

In addition, you can expect your insurance to pay for the cost of hiring an attorney to defend you in court.

Many homeowners also purchase what's known as an 'umbrella' or 'excess liability' policy, which provides another layer of liability coverage for instances when someone claims that he or she was injured by some accident or harm that you caused. A typical renter's policy covers loss of personal property and living expenses incurred if your home becomes uninhabitable. It also covers your medical expenses for injuries sustained on the premises, and claims by others for injuries that they sustain while on the premises.
