I signed a consent form before surgery. What does it mean?

Health care providers generally seek your consent before medical procedures such as surgery. However, there are certain times when your consent is not obtained, such as in an emergency when you are unable to give consent but need treatment to save your life or to prevent significant adverse consequences. The actual consent is a process, where you and the physician exchange information and you agree to undergo a specific procedure or treatment. A consent form simply documents the process.

While many physicians and hospitals use forms to document the consent process, a verbal consent can also be valid. There are many factors that will impact the nature of the consent, such as the type of procedure involved and your age and mental state. Make sure you understand exactly what you are authorizing the physician to do, including all the risks and benefits of the procedure or treatment.

You should also discuss the possibility of alternative procedures before giving your consent. To a certain extent, it's your responsibility to ask questions if you don't understand the information presented by the health care provider. Clearly communicate any limitations to your consent. You have the right to revoke your verbal or written consent at any time. If you change your mind about a surgical procedure or treatment, you should immediately tell your health care providers.
