How do I stop payment on a check?

Any owner or joint-owner of an account may order a bank to stop payment. The request must identify the check by providing information including the check number, who the check was written to, the date of the check and the amount.

The request must be made promptly to ensure that the check is not paid by the bank before the stop payment is received. To save time, the request to stop payment may be made by telephone, but should be followed up by a written request. If the bank pays the check after receiving the notice, the bank may be liable for any loss the owner suffers.

However, if the owner rightfully owed the amount of the check, there would be no loss even if the bank paid the check. A bank generally charges a fee to process the stop payment order.
