What's the Family and Medical Leave Act?

The Family and Medical Leave Act was enacted to protect your job under certain family and medical situations.

The Act requires that your Employer provide you with up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave in various situations like the birth or adoption of a child, a serious health condition, or if you need to care for a spouse, child, or parent with a serious health condition. Your Employer must continue to provide your health insurance while you are gone.

When you return to work, your Employer is generally required to give you back your original job or a job that is equivalent in pay, benefits, and employment terms.

You should also be aware that qualifying for protection under this Act depends on how long you have been employed, providing advance notice and medical certification, and also the size of the company you work for.
